One Lonely, but successful Watermelon 🍉

On April 4th, students from “Options for Youth” came out to the garden and planted a variety of seeds in our garden beds.

Fast forward to this past weekend:

Over the weekend we had the aftermath of a hurricane pass by the garden giving it a good watering that will last a handful of days. As I went out to the garden on Monday to observe anything that needed to have immediate attention I noticed this watermelon hiding under its foliage. This watermelon took over 4 months to develop. 😳 I checked out the tendril and it was indeed dried out giving me the go ahead to harvest. Today’s harvest and donation of our first watermelon from the seeds that the students planted weighed in at a whopping 18.6 pounds. It may be one lonely watermelon, but what a success! Not too shabby, right?

Major high-fives to the whole crew that cam out in April to plant those seeds... you rocked it with your seed planting skills! 👏🍉
